Traveling to the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky" is an exhilarating experience, but it’s not your typical vacation. To ensure you spend your time focusing on the golden light and the nomadic smiles rather than logistical stress, here is everything you need to know before you land in Ulaanbaatar.

1. Visa Requirements: Check Early

Mongolia has recently expanded its visa-free travel list for many countries (including many European nations, the USA, and more).

  • Action: Check the official Mongolian E-Visa website or your local embassy at least 30 days before departure.

  • Tip: If you need an invitation letter for a business or specialized visa, let us know early!

2. Money & Connectivity: Cash is King (Outside the City)

While Ulaanbaatar is a modern city where you can tap your card for coffee, the steppe is a different world.

  • Currency: The Mongolian Tögrög (MNT). You can exchange USD or EUR easily in the city.

  • Cash: Always carry small denominations of MNT for local markets or nomadic crafts.

  • SIM Cards: We recommend getting a local SIM (Mobicom or Unitel) at the airport. It works in many surprising places, but remember: in the deep Altai or Gobi, "No Signal" is the best signal.

3. Health & Vaccinations

There are no mandatory vaccinations for Mongolia, but being prepared is part of the adventure.

  • Pack a Personal Med-Kit: Include basics for headaches, stomach upsets (different diet!), and any personal prescriptions.

  • Hydration: The air is incredibly dry. Bring a reusable water bottle and high-quality lip balm/moisturizer.

4. The "Nomadfollows" Photography Mindset

Since you are joining a photography-focused expedition, your preparation starts at home.

  • Batteries: Charging stops can be infrequent in remote Ger camps. Bring at least 3 spare batteries and a high-capacity power bank.

  • Storage: You will take more photos than you think. Bring extra SD cards.

  • Insurance: Ensure your travel insurance specifically covers "Adventure Travel" and your expensive camera gear.

5. Physical & Mental Prep

Mongolia involves long drives (sometimes 5-7 hours) over bumpy "natural roads."

  • Comfort: Bring a small travel pillow for the 4x4 and some of your favorite snacks from home.

  • Patience: In the steppe, time is fluid. Sometimes we stop for a herd of 500 horses crossing the road, and sometimes we wait an hour for the perfect cloud to move. Embrace the slow pace.
